Cutting your own hair may be hazardous to your health

Now you tell me, with the way women do their hair today, turned up and down and all around, is it that important to have straight-cut hair?

You see, I cut my hair today. I didn't just cut my bangs either. My mom thought it was the funniest thing when we talked later. Well, the thing is, when I was a little girl, I would cut all my dolls' hair. It mortified her back then, and now, I cut my own hair and she thinks it's funny. Go figure.

My husband said it looked all right. I should say we have only been married for a few years, so he is still nice. My daughter had no such qualms. “Are you crazy?? I hope you go see a ‘real’ hairdresser before you drive me back home. I don't want to be seen in public with you!” Now wait a minute! Okay, so I had to recut a little bit here and there because hair was hanging out on the sides, but it's no worse than the last time I went to a “real” hairdresser. She missed my sides too!

Actually, I didn't do a bad job.

It all started out when I looked at myself in the mirror this morning. The grey is starting to show again, so I need hair color as well. I saw my old aunt looking back at me. No way! I've been wanting to go to a hairdresser for weeks now. My old hairdresser skipped town after I got her so stressed out because I just kept fretting about my hair. Since then, nobody wants me to come back. Actually, I gave myself a better haircut than at least one of the so-called professionals I've been using lately.

I went up the stairs to my “styling salon” backward. I knew I shouldn't do it. I really knew better. I was thinking that if the phone rang, or if someone came to the door, then that would be my sign that I shouldn't do it. Nobody called, and nobody came, so up I went. When I looked at the mirror again, I kept thinking it can't be that hard. You just pull out strands and cut. I had seen hairdressers do it often enough, you take a thin row right up on top. There, that wasn't so bad. But now I had to continue. I kept thinking about the old joke of cutting one side shorter than the other, side after side after side. Oh my God!
