My First Super Bowl Party

I’m fifty and I just experienced my very first Super Bowl party. Seriously. Being from Canada, and living most of my teen life with my mother alone, my life was "sheltered" from the Super Bowl. Oh sure, we have the Grey Cup, but in the years where I may have become interested, we did not have a team in Montreal. The whole football thing went right by me.

Now that I’m married to a Texan, it is not much different. He watches, but his team was not quite up to par, so he lost interest very quickly. I never was a football widow. Sometimes I wish I were.

So when my friend called to invite us to her Super Bowl party, I was excited. Finally, I would get the feel the excitement! What food do we eat at this kind of thing? What about drinks? Is it a beer night , a wine night, a soda night? My friend said we'd have a Mexican theme. Ok. I was going to make flour tortillas, chipotle meatballs and, oh well, briskett. My husband absolutely wanted to try to smoke a briskett again. It turned out alright, but it certainly was not what I would call Mexican.

Our friends tried to explain the game to me. I couldn't quite get the personal foul, sack, interception, covering the flat, hurry up offence, encroachment, nose tackle, middle line backer, intentional grounding, … Is that even English? But that’s alright. Just watching the people enjoying the last 5 minutes of a generally boring game was fun. I thought they were speaking another language. Surely we all looked like aliens with our 3D glasses during some of the commercials. I am no longer a virgin Super Bowl partyer!
