"We Are All Pirates"

We are all pirates. We are all on the high seas. On a ship called Earth. Searching for that treasure. This “treasure”, so what is it? It might be just enough to get us through the day, or the month, or the year. Or it might make us rich and prosperous beyond our wildest dreams, for the rest of our very long lives! It is what makes us get on the ship and travel aimlessly through treacherous seas and storms, dock hostile habitats, and compete with other cutthroat pirates!

In the music world, as in life, the treasures also vary. You might “find” that you have an incredible musical talent. What a treasure! Maybe find a great band you are totally compatible with. Maybe find yourself with a finished product, a full-length album you’ve just finished! Maybe a world tour, with management at your beck and call! Or maybe even a major label supporting you full steam? Like a pirate, you dream of these treasures! The fame, the fortune, the feeling of being appreciated, the access to see the world, to experience every culture available, the freedom of making your music on the highest level. The world at your, and your band’s feet! It is these treasures that drive us all.

On the ship, there’s the captain, the leader of the group. There’s the first mate, the second-in-command. There’s the boatswain, the carpenter, the gunner, the cook, that unappreciated pirate who does the little, but very important things. In your band, your life, your work, your friends and family….which one are you? Which role do you play?

I have been, and always will be, in all of the above groups. I have played just about all the roles. Many times, the group never finds the treasure! Sometimes the treasure they find lasts only for fifteen minutes. Why? Because they kill each other before they ever find the treasure! They forget that each role is just as important as the next. Some roles glamorous, some dirty, some very appreciated, some unappreciated. But every role is important. In the ship, mutiny lingers. Someone always want to steer the ship, give orders, and be the lead singer or guitarist. They want all the glory for themselves!
What’s the glory in being the pirate? All pirates eventually gets killed, kill each other in the end. There are only a handful of legendary pirates. But the real true pirates find the treasure first, then kill each other.

Find your treasure first…then kill each other. Find your treasure first. There, is the glory!
We are all pirates.

Taken from Robert Calixto's "Making It" column.
Sponsored by EnterTo.com the first REAL spam free email

Click Below to discover and share content from anywhere on the web
